What is a RTU?

A remote terminal unit (RTU) is a device or system that interfaces with other equipment.
Typically, a RTU converts electrical signals from the equipment to digital values that represent such items as the open/closed status of a switch or valve and measurement values for pressure, flow, voltage, and current.
By converting these electrical signals and sending the digital values out to the equipment, the RTU can initiate control sequences such as opening or closing a switch or valve, and setting the speed of a pump.

    RTU-300 controller

Controller RTU-300 is a part of Alpha CENTER metering system.

Controller RTU-300 is a family of data acquisition, processing, and communication units. There are three main variations RTU-300, RTU-310 and RTU-320. Each variation is based on an Remote Communications Server OS-9 platform and Windows NT operating system. The configuration software is simple and easy to use. The database and reporting tools are included as separate blocks and configurable on customer request.

The RTU differ in the controller types, capacity and the environment. Functional capabilities and capacity can be upgraded both, by means of replacing one RTU series with another, and by integrating of add-on modules into controllers. RTUs are designed for application at power utilities, industrial plants and other organizations which make independent mutual settlements with energy suppliers or consumers.

    • RTU-300 is the most powerful VME standard unit. RTU-300 maintains multi-level operating performance, along with providing reliability and flexibility in communication. RTU-300 was designed for the special series of AMR single purpose devices.

    • RTU-310 provides more functionality than the RTU-320. The standard RTU-310 uses an IUC32 controller (PEP Co. Germany). The communication possibilities include Profibus and a local Ethernet network.
RTU-320 uses a Motorola 68302 microprocessor and operates in a Profibus network as a slave. It can also be used with RS-485 to connect ALPHA meters and Splitter with halvanically isolated current loop interfaces (MPR16).

    • RTU-300 family has been certified in Russia, Ukraine, Byelarus and Kazakhstan as a type of measurement instrumentation for commercial energy billing. These units are produced since 1999, and up to now over 500 units have been installed at industrial plants and power utilities.

Basic RTU application – high-accuracy time-of-use commercial energy consumption (delivery) metering (in multiple-rate conditions), real-time preset load technical billing and monitoring. Data is collected from meters type ALPHA and EuroALPHA (IRPS “current loop”, RS232, RS422/485) via digital channels.

The RTU has a box-type design, protection class IP 65, and a cabinet-type design, protection class IP 55, which allows to install these units either directly at the objects or in data collection centers.

Application of a liquid-crystal display (LCD) with 128 per 128 points resolution allows to easily take readings from meters (connected to RTU) and obtain data calculated based on such readings. Special-purpose software is used for selection of data displayed on LCD as well as for RTU configuring.

The RTU provides the following functions:

    • Collection, processing, logging, storage and display of energy meter data on required and delivered active and reactive energy and power.

    • Combining of measurements taken from meters into common group measurements corresponding to specific objects.

    • Time-of-use energy metering taking account of time zones within a preset time interval.

    • Demand interval measurement (one of the two intervals: 1, 3, 5 minutes and 15, 30 minutes).

    • Searching for power maximum within preset time intervals.

    • Archiving according to preset structure.

    • Supporting the universal time system to provide synchronous measurements.

    • Keeping track of 2 preset excess power limits.

    • Measured energy display by meter indicator readings.

    • Parallel data transmission from RTU via physical line or dialup or dedicated telephone channels (or other communications environment) to several data collection centers.

    • Protection of measured data and IVK metrological characteristics against tampering and unauthorized modifications.

    • Internal operability monitoring.

For direct connection to individual RTU and for RTU group data readout (for instance, in the event of communication line breakdown) it is possible to take RTU readings directly at the object using portable computer type NoteBook with the following data transmission to the higher-level computer. The RTU will automatically restore data lost as the result of a line breakdown between the meter and RTU. On the basis of RTU-300 it is possible to design the distributed, hierarchical metering systems. A wide range of communication interfaces allows to create flexible metering systems based on RTU-300 with their customization depending on the infrastructure of a specific enterprise.

Secure Remote IP Access with Asentria SiteBoss™ Units

    SiteBoss 571
Security, while accessing equipment in remote locations, is a top priority in today's communication landscape. Asentria provides a full range of remote terminal units and software tools to allow Secure Remote IP Access, helping to reduce the operating costs of your communication network.
With access via internal GSM wireless modem, CDMA wireless modem, or standard Ethernet, a SiteBoss unit allows the connectivity to attached remote devices as if the user were at the site directly.

Asentria has a variety of products that have traditionally been referred to as Remote Terminal Units (RTU). An RTU traditionally has been a device that was a part of a communication network that would monitor contact closures, analog measurements, or perhaps perform some parsing and evaluation of a legacy protocol. In most cases today, this data is converted into the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), which is a commonly desired alarm format that many devices within a communication network can report on their status.
In existing equipment rooms, contact closures, analog points, and relays may often already be terminated to a legacy RTU type of device. One of the most common uses of Asentria products is to replace existing legacy RTU’s, such as a “Badger” device, to enable the transmission of alarms via a more modern alarm standard such as SNMP. Asentria products have great flexibility in providing various I/O counts, and can provide alarms in any standard SNMP format, as well as offer paging, SMS, and other more unusual alarm methods.

    RTU - Remote Terminal Unit

A remote terminal unit (RTU) is a microprocessor-controlled electronic device that interfaces objects in the physical world to a distributed control system or SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) system by transmitting telemetry data to a master system, and by using messages from the master supervisory system to control connected objects. Another term that may be used for RTU is remote telemetry unit, the common usage term varies with the application area generally.

    Architecture

An RTU monitors the field digital and analog parameters and transmits data to the Central Monitoring Station. It contains setup software to connect data input streams to data output streams, define communication protocols, and troubleshoot installation problems.
An RTU may consist of one complex circuit card consisting of various sections needed to do a custom fitted function or may consist of many circuit cards including CPU or processing with communications interface(s), and one or more of the following: (AI) analog input, (DI) digital input, (DO/CO) digital or control (relay) output, or (AO) analog output card(s).

    Power supply

A form of power supply will be included for operation from the AC mains for various CPU, status wetting voltages and other interface cards. This may consist of DC to DC converters where operated from a station battery system.
RTUs may include a battery and charger circuitry to continue operation in event of AC power failure for critical applications where a station battery is not available.

    Digital or status inputs

Most RTUs incorporate an input section or input status cards to acquire two state real world information. This is usually accomplished by using an isolated voltage or current source to sense the position of a remote contact (open or closed) at the RTU site. This contact position may represent many different devices, including electrical breakers, liquid valve positions, alarm conditions, and mechanical positions of devices.

    Analog inputs

An RTU can monitor analog inputs of different types including 0-1 mA, 4–20 mA current loop, 0–10 V., ±2.5 V, ±5.0 V etc. Many RTU inputs buffer larger quantities via transducers to convert and isolate real world quantities from sensitive RTU input levels. An RTU can also receive analog data via a communication system from a master or IED sending data values to it.
The RTU or host system translates and scales this raw data into the appropriate units such as gallons of water left, temperature degrees, or Megawatts, before presenting the data to the user via the HMI.

    Digital (control) outputs

RTUs may drive high current capacity relays to a digital output (or "DO") board to switch power on and off to devices in the field. The DO board switches voltage to the coil in the relay, which closes the high current contacts, which completes the power circuit to the device.
RTU outputs may also consist of driving a sensitive logic input on an electronic PLC, or other electronic device using a sensitive 5 V input.

    Analog outputs

While not as commonly used, analog outputs may be included to control devices that require varying quantities, such as graphic recording instruments (strip charts). Summed or massaged data quantities may be generated in a master SCADA system and output for display locally or remotely, wherever needed.

    Software and logic control

Modern RTUs are usually capable of executing simple programs autonomously without involving the host computers of the DCS or SCADA system to simplify deployment, and to provide redundancy for safety reasons. An RTU in a modern water management system will typically have code to modify its behavior when physical override switches on the RTU are toggled during maintenance by maintenance personnel. This is done for safety reasons; a miscommunication between the system operators and the maintenance personnel could cause system operators to mistakenly enable power to a water pump when it is being replaced, for example.

    Communications

An RTU may be interfaced to multiple master stations and IEDs with different communication media (usually serial (RS232, RS485, RS422) or Ethernet). An RTU may support standard protocols (Modbus, IEC 60870-5-101/103/104, DNP3, IEC 60870-6-ICCP, IEC 61850 etc.) to interface any third party software.
Data transfer may be initiated from either end using various techniques to insure synchronisation with a mimimal data traffic. The master may poll its subordinate unit (Master to RTU or the RTU poll an IED) for changes of data on a periodic basis. Analog value changes will usually only be reported only on changes outside a set limit from the last transmitted value. Digital (status) values observe a similar technique and only transmit groups (bytes) when one included point (bit) changes. Another method used is where a subordinate unit initiates an update of data upon a perdetermined change in analog of digital data. Periodic complete data transmission must be used periodically, with either method, to insure full synchronisation and eliminate stale data. Most communication protocols support both methods, programmable by the installer.
Multiple RTUs or multiple IEDs may share a communications line, in a multi-drop scheme, as units are addressed uniquely and only respond, politely, to their own polls and commands.

    IED communications

IED communications transfer data between the RTU and an IED (Intelligent End Device) . This can eliminate the need for many hardware status inputs, analog inputs, and relay outputs in the RTU. Communications are accomplished by copper or fibre optics lines. Multiple units may share communication lines.

    Master communications

Master communications are usually to a larger control system in a control room or a data collecion system incorporated into a larger system. Data may be moved using a copper, fibre optic or radio frequency communication system. Multiple units may share communication lines.

    Comparison with other control systems

RTUs differ from programmable logic controllers (PLCs) in that RTUs are more suitable for wide geographical telemetry, often using wireless communications, while PLCs are more suitable for local area control (plants, production lines, etc.) where the system utilizes physical media for control. The IEC 61131 programming tool is more popular for use with PLCs, while RTUs often use proprietary programming tools.
RTUs, PLCs and DCS are increasingly beginning to overlap in responsibilities, and many vendors sell RTUs with PLC-like features and vice versa. The industry has standardized on the IEC 61131-3 functional block language for creating programs to run on RTUs and PLCs, although nearly all vendors also offer proprietary alternatives and associated development environments.
In addition, some vendors now supply RTUs with comprehensive functionality pre-defined, sometimes with PLC extensions and/or interfaces for configuration.
Some suppliers of RTUs have created simple graphical user interfaces GUI to enable customers to configure their RTUs easily. In some applications dataloggers are used in similar applications.
A programmable automation controller (PAC) is a compact controller that combines the features and capabilities of a PC-based control system with that of a typical PLC. PACs are deployed in SCADA systems to provide RTU and PLC functions. In many electrical substation SCADA applications, "distributed RTUs" use information processors or station computers to communicate with digital protective relays, PACS, and other devices for I/O, and communicate with the SCADA master in lieu of a traditional RTU.
